Postpartum Counselling for the Parts No One Warned You About
Having a baby can be joyful, exhausting, overwhelming, complicated, and sometimes all of those things at once.

You may have imagined feeling happy and connected after your baby arrived, but instead you're anxious, irritable, numb, overwhelmed, or constantly worried that something is going to go wrong. You might be struggling to sleep even when your baby is sleeping, checking on your baby repeatedly, feeling disconnected from yourself, or wondering why you don't feel like the version of yourself you expected to become.

Or maybe you're struggling with something that happened before your baby was even born. Pregnancy loss, infertility, a difficult pregnancy, a traumatic birth, a NICU stay, or previous reproductive experiences can shape the way you experience pregnancy and parenthood.
Sometimes the emotional impact doesn't become clear until you're finally home with your baby.
Postpartum counselling isn't about teaching you how to be a better mom. It's a space to understand what's happening beneath the surface, process what you've been through, and reconnect with yourself in the middle of a huge life transition.

What Does Postpartum Counselling Look Like?
There isn't one way postpartum counselling should look.

At Root & Bloom, therapy is tailored to what you're experiencing, what you've been through, and what feels useful to you. You don't need to know which approach you need before you book. That's something we can figure out together.
We draw from several evidence-informed approaches, including:
Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR can be helpful when you're carrying the impact of a traumatic birth, pregnancy loss, infertility, medical experiences, or other events that still feel emotionally charged.
Emotion-Focused Therapy
Emotion-Focused Therapy helps you make sense of emotions rather than simply trying to get rid of them. Together, we can explore what your emotions are communicating and what you may need underneath them.
DBT-Informed Approaches
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills can provide practical tools for managing intense emotions, navigating overwhelm, improving communication, and getting through particularly difficult moments.
Internal Family
Systems (IFS)
IFS can help you better understand the different thoughts, emotions, and reactions that can come up in parenthood. It explores where they come from, what they may be trying to protect, and what you need underneath them.
Somatic Therapy
Sometimes your body is still responding to an experience when even you've processed what happened. Somatic therapy can help you work with the physical responses connected to stress, anxiety, trauma, and overwhelm.
Attachment-Based Therapy
Parenthood can bring up questions about relationships with your baby, your partner, your parents, and yourself. Attachment-based work can help you understand these patterns and build more secure, connected relationships.
Meet Your Postpartum Therapists

Becca Staley, MACP
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
Becca Staley is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) who works with individuals navigating perinatal mental health concerns, anxiety, trauma, and major life transitions. Her approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that therapy should feel like a place where you can be honest about what's actually happening — without judgment or pressure to have everything figured out. Becca incorporates approaches including EMDR, Internal Family Systems, somatic therapy, attachment-based therapy, and emotion-focused work. She has a particular interest in supporting clients through pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, birth trauma, fertility loss, and reproductive trauma. Her work recognizes that the transition into parenthood doesn't happen in isolation. Previous experiences with pregnancy, infertility, loss, medical care, relationships, and family can all shape how someone experiences becoming a parent.

Jodie Muir, MSW
Registered Social Worker
Jodie Muir is a Registered Social Worker and the owner of Root & Bloom Therapy Services. She supports individuals and couples navigating perinatal mental health concerns, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship changes, and major identity transitions. Jodie's approach is warm, direct, collaborative, and rooted in the belief that emotions aren't problems to be fixed. Instead, they can provide important information about what you need, what you've experienced, and what matters to you. She draws from approaches including Emotion-Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, attachment-based therapy, Motivational Interviewing, strengths-based approaches, and trauma-informed practice. Jodie has a particular interest in postpartum anxiety, postpartum depression, birth trauma, reproductive trauma, fertility loss, identity changes, and the complicated emotional experience of becoming a parent. Her goal isn't to give you another list of things you're supposed to be doing as a mom. It's to create space for you to understand yourself, process your experiences, and figure out what you need.
Therapy That Fits Around Your Baby
Finding time for therapy can feel like one more impossible thing to fit into your day. That's why Root & Bloom offers morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend appointments.
Your baby doesn't follow a 9-to-5 schedule, and your therapy appointments don't have to either.

We offer flexible scheduling for parents navigating naps, feeds, daycare, work schedules, and everything else that comes with caring for a little one.
Choose The Format That Works For You

1
In-Person Therapy
Meet with us in our Brantford office for face-to-face therapy in a comfortable setting that doesn't feel like a doctor's office. We have toys for your baby to play with, and are happy to do sessions while sitting on the floor with your baby!
2
Virtual Therapy
Prefer to stay home for your appointments? Virtual sessions are available across Ontario, making therapy accessible whether you're home with your baby, don't have childcare, or simply feel more comfortable in your own space.
3
Walk-and-Talk Therapy
Sometimes sitting across from a therapist doesn't feel like the right fit. Walk-and-talk sessions offer the opportunity to move your body and talk while spending time outdoors. Babies often do great in the stroller during these!

Supporting Moms Through Melissa for Moms
We are proud to partner with Melissa for Moms, a local nonprofit founded with the goal of providing resources for parents struggling with postpartum depression and/or psychosis. In addition to providing parents with the proper resources needed to combat this mental health crisis, the foundation raises awareness to work toward breaking the stigma of perinatal mental health.

We believe that access to support shouldn't depend on whether someone knows where to look for it. Through this partnership, we're able to connect with local parents and contribute to a broader network of resources for families during pregnancy and early parenthood.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is postpartum therapy, and how do I know if I need it?
Postpartum therapy supports new parents experiencing anxiety, depression, birth trauma, or overwhelm after having a baby. If you're noticing persistent sadness, worry, disconnection from your baby, or difficulty functioning day-to-day, therapy can help. We uses EMDR, IFS, EFT, DBT, somatic therapy and more to support this transition, with evening and weekend appointments available.
Do you offer sliding scale or direct billing to insurance?
Yes! Root & Bloom does offer direct billing to most major insurance providers.
How much does a postpartum therapy session cost?
A 50-minute individual session is $160, and a 25-minute session is $80. These rates apply to in-person, walk-and-talk, or virtual sessions.
What is EMDR, and can it help with birth trauma or pregnancy loss?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy approach that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they feel less overwhelming. Becca uses EMDR specifically for birth trauma, reproductive loss, and other perinatal experiences that feel “stuck.”
Should I book with Jodie or Becca?
Both Jodie and Becca offer individual and postpartum-focused therapy. Becca currently has more immediate availability, including evenings and weekends, and specializes in postpartum, fertility loss, and reproductive trauma alongside EMDR, IFS, and somatic approaches.
